What is shuzukan?(しゅうずかんとは?)

Shuzukan is an Okinawan restaurant in Azabu-Juban; but calling it a “restaurant” is somewhat inaccurate.

If you go there, you’ll probably find everyone drinking awamori and chatting with each other.

Many will be regulars, and even people for whom it’s their first time there will be joining in with the merriment.

The regulars are extremely amiable – lovers of awamori, and lovers of sanshin.

Amongst them, around half can tease a melody from a sanshin, but a few are true experts. For instance, Nakamura-san and Hamada-san both regularly perform in concerts and at Okinawan events.

You’ll also find professional Ryukyu-buyō performers and even one amateur Eisa
enthusiast (me!).

Alex and Shuzukan(アレックスとしゅうずかん)

When I moved to Japan back in 2015, I soon joined Aikido Azabu Dojo.

The members at that time were in the habit of heading across the road to
Shuzukan after training, and so they took me along.

It was my first week in Japan.

Because it was my first experience of a Japanese “watering hole”, I didn’t realise at the time how unusual it is. I knew immediately, however, that it was a good place.

I couldn’t speak any Japanese at all, but I still had a good time. By the end of the night, I had learned my first Japanese word: “nommunication”.

It was at the Shuzukan where I leaned to play the sanshin – I was taught by the other regulars.

And it was the proprietors who introduced me to Shoryu Matsuridako. I had been to the Shinjuku Eisa Matsuri and wanted to try it myself, and asked Shuzukan’s Mama-san if she knew any eisa troupes.

The rest, as they say, is history.

44th anniversary party(44

This year Shuzukan celebrated its 44th anniversary.

It hasn’t always been an Okinawan restaurant, however (although Master-san has always been Okinawan!) – it began its life as a coffee shop, quickly transforming into an Italian restaurant. In 1998 it transformed again, this time into its present form.

Every year they hold a party to celebrate its establishment.

On its 40th anniversary, we rented out a yakatabune and sailed up and down the Sumida river, eating and drinking.

This year was no exception.

I arrived late so things were already in full-swing.

Master-san welcomed me in and said,

“Alex, you’re late!”

“Sorry, I was at Eisa training,”

I said.

“Oh! That’s OK then!”

he replied.

There was plenty of delicious food and and special awamori. However, what the food was, and what was special about the awamori, I have completely forgotten.

I suppose the awamori must have been a bit too special!

At the end of the night, sanshins were passed around and we played Tōshin Dōi while people danced kachāshī.
